Artist , researcher and curator Sara Blokland will share her current artistic research into the life-size figures collection at the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam. Blokland’s work examines the ambiguous relationship between photography and (post)colonial cultural histories. Within her current Ph.D research, ‘A human copy of violence’ she approaches these life-sized figures often based on photographs – as ‘Alive’ embodying and performing colonial power relations throughout their ‘lives.’ During the program Sara Blokland will show and talk about this research in progress. All are welcome and we especially invite public who may have their own experiences, stories and encounters with these figures and this collection to join the discussion.

Sara Blokland is a visual artist, researcher, and curator in the field of photography. In her work, she explores the complex (power) relationship between photography and (post)colonial cultural histories. Her work has been part of various national and international exhibitions and is included in several corporate and museum collections. She is the creator and/or  co-editor of several books, such as Unfixed (2012) , Van waarde (2008), and de Politiekapel (2009), and has worked as a researcher and curator on projects such as “Srefidensi” (2015-2017) and “Contemporary Caribbean Perspectives” (2020) . She currently teaches at the KaBK, HKU, and the Leiden University. Since September 2024, she has been a research associate at the Research Center for Material Culture (RCMC) and a PhD candidate at Leiden University.
