Fam. Abstract

Fam. Abstract (2002) is a series of mainly polaroids  in which Sara Blokland portrays her closest family members .The figures are often covered with cloth, turned away from the camera, or only partially revealed, such as a detail of a face emerging  a dark space. The use of Polaroid reinforces the intimacy of the work. Its small scale and immediate development create a direct connection to the moment of photographing at the same time, this proximity is countered by the deliberate obscuring of the subjects. Through these strategies, Fam. Abstract explores the tension between intimacy and inaccessibility. Although the subjects are her  family members and a selfportrait , they remain partly unreachable where closeness becomes a form of distance .
